Biofeedback therapy at Memorial Hospital is tailored to your individual needs and specific diagnosis. Biofeedback instrumentation is used with other therapies to correct psycho physiological (body-mind) dysfunction, reduce or eliminate symptoms, improve self management, enhance quality of life, and/or prevent symptom recurrence.
Successful treatment involves the use of biofeedback instruments along with counseling and coaching by the therapist, and training and practice by the patient. Children and adults can master self regulation skills for achieving specific clinical goals, improving performance and enhancing a personal sense of self control.
Is this a type of psychotherapy?
Biofeedback therapy is a type of 'behavioral medicine' used to enhance medical care, psychotherapy, physical therapy and other treatment modalities. It focuses primarily on learning self-regulation through simple, direct, immediate feedback of physiological information and providing instruction in how to change the physiological state. Additional procedures may include cognitive techniques for changing thoughts, perceptions and feelings; imagery techniques for guiding physiological responses; and coaching to attain healthy behaviors and life style. Biofeedback therapy requires your active participation and practice:
Your Responsibilities as a Patient
Biofeedback therapy and other self-regulation techniques are designed to encourage you to take an active, responsible role in your recovery and in maintaining your health. Emphasis on such self-responsibility enhances personal investment in the recovery process, in treatment compliance and involvement in other aspects of medical care.
In biofeedback therapy:
- You learn self-regulation skills that you can use to reduce stress, alleviate symptoms and enhance overall functioning.
- You and your therapist will establish goals and design a treatment program that meets your needs.
- You will understand how emotional and mental reactions to events create stress and affect the body.
- You will use biofeedback instrumentation as a tool for learning to regulate body processes.
- You can expect a home training program in which you practice and master the skills needed to achieve your treatment goals
- Symptom reduction or
- Prevention of symptom recurrence
- Medication reduction
- Ability to reduce anxiety
- Reduction in Type A behaviors
- Increased emotional control

- More relaxed approach to life
How long will treatment last?
Length of treatment varies with the type and severity of the disorder, ranging from six to twelve sessions. Very rarely are more required. Multiple or complex disorders, chronic symptoms, and factors such as personal motivation or multiple life stressors, may influence treatment length. Often, treatment is short term, and you then may use self regulation skills independently with continued improvement.
