Aug. 7: Memorial Health System Re-Verified as a Level II Trauma Center

Following an extensive review by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the Colorado Department of Health State Emergency and Trauma Advisory Council has unanimously voted to re-designate Memorial Health System’s Level II Trauma Center without deficiency. Memorial’s Level II trauma designation reflects the Center’s comprehensive care for complex and severe trauma patients under the direction of on-site trauma surgeons, emergency physicians and nurses, who are readily available to direct patient care and initiate resuscitation and stabilization interventions. The Center was commended for its timely access to a broad range of specialists, comprehensive diagnostic tools and support initiatives—including its tiered activation triage system, which received the review committee's full endorsement as a “best practice” for other Trauma Centers across the nation. Members of the ACS review committee dually noted the Center’s proficiencies in the areas of clinical research, professional and community education, injury prevention, and regional outreach programs and services.

Memorial Trauma Center’s multi-disciplinary team includes:

  • Eight adult trauma surgeons (three board-certified in vascular surgery)
  • Four pediatric trauma surgeons
  • Trauma emergency and critical care nurses
  • Trauma program manager, patient care clinician and social worker
  • A trauma outreach and injury prevention coordinator
  • Adult and pediatric specialists in emergency medicine, critical care, orthopedics, cardiology, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, pain management, neurology, rehabilitative medicine and nutrition

Memorial Health System has the distinction of being the busiest Level II Trauma Center in the state of Colorado with the region’s only pediatric trauma unit.
