Jan 3: Colorado’s First and Only Ronald McDonald Family Room to Open at Memorial Hospital for Children

For Immediate Release

January 3, 2008

On Monday, January 7, 2008 the Ronald McDonald Family Room will open at Memorial Hospital for Children, in partnership with The Children’s Hospital. There are more than 100 Ronald McDonald Family Rooms around the world and this will be the first and only Ronald McDonald Family Room in Colorado.

“The Family Room’s purpose is to be a ‘refuge within the hospital’ for immediate family members who have a child in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) or pediatric unit at Memorial Hospital for Children”, says Steve Brown, family room coordinator. “The Family Room provides a place to rest, relax and recharge from the environment of the hospital while allowing families to remain near their child”.

The family room is conveniently located on the third floor across from the NICU and is just one floor below the pediatric unit. Volunteers staff the family room and make sure families have a warm, welcoming environment that feels like home. Families will have access to a full bath with shower and linens, washer/dryer, dining and living room area, children’s playroom, kitchenette, computer workstations and digital lockers to keep personal items secure.

The family room will be open daily from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. as long as there is a family room trained volunteer present.

Founded in 1974, Ronald McDonald House provides a "home-away-from-home" for the families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. To date, more than three million family members have temporarily resided in 259 Ronald McDonald Houses in 28 countries. The Ronald McDonald House is the cornerstone program of Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), a not-for-profit organization that develops and supports programs that directly improve the health and well being of children worldwide. Operation of the charities is supported in large part by the generosity of local donors and volunteers. RMHC of Southern Colorado began operations in 1987, and has since aided over 6,000 families through the Ronald McDonald House and awarded more than $600,000 in grants to children's programs in Southern Colorado.
