Oct 7: Put Your Baby “Back to Sleep”

The leading cause of death in children ages one month to one year is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). SIDS claims the lives of over 2,500 babies annually in the United States alone. The cause of SIDS is still unknown and the death of a child through SIDS is unpredictable and can occur in even the most seemingly healthy infant.

In an effort to raise awareness about SIDS, Memorial Health System is providing a free HALO SleepSack Wearable Blanket to all babies born at Memorial during October, SIDS awareness month. Research shows that 25 percent of babies who died of SIDS were found with a blanket covering their face. This new HALO SleepSack is a unique product that eliminates loose blankets and provides a warm and comfortable environment for babies to sleep.
The most important message to parents is to lay your baby to sleep on his back. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) first recommended putting baby to sleep on his/her back in 1992. Since then, the rate of SIDS deaths has dropped 40 percent.
