Sep 15: The New Mary Lou Beshears Breast Care Center at Memorial Health System
For Immediate Release
September 15, 2008
In our continuing effort to provide the highest quality health care, Memorial Health System started a journey in 2007 to be the first health care facility in Colorado Springs to offer digital mammography. The Memorial Health System Foundation hosted a breakfast in late 2007 to raise money to support this initiative. Thanks to the generosity of our community, the Foundation raised more than $120,000 to move forward with the plan to bring digital mammography to our community.
At that breakfast, Mr. Gayle Beshears stepped up and matched dollar for dollar, every dollar raised that morning. In appreciation of his donation, Memorial renamed the Breast Care Center in honor of Mr. Beshears’s wife of 50 years, Mary Lou Beshears.
Thanks to Mr. Beshears and others in our community who supported this program, Memorial Health System became the first facility in Colorado Springs to offer digital mammography in March, 2008. Research shows that digital mammography is superior to film mammography in screening for breast cancer in women younger than 50 years with dense breasts.
The new Mary Lou Beshears Breast Care Center at Memorial Health System was dedicated on Wed., Sep. 17 at 6 p.m. The center is located in the Printers Park Medical Plaza at 175 S. Union Blvd.
