Colorado Springs Children’s Hospital Celebrates Generous Donation from Mattel, Inc. – 8/29/05

The Colorado Springs Children’s Hospital at Memorial Hospital has received a treasure trove of toys complements of Mattel, Inc. and the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI)—an accrediting agency for 186 children’s hospitals nationwide. NACHRI’s Toy Donation Program was launched in an effort to bring joy and comfort to hospitalized children.

In August, hospital staff and a special guest unpacked a swelling bag of toys for the enjoyment of Memorial’s pediatric patients. The event included room-to-room visits from a remarkably gifted Husky canine named Cole. The prodigy pooch performed a variety of tricks, acrobatics and even voiced "I Love You" in English, rather than the traditional “bow-wow” dialect. Cole served as Mattel’s unofficial mascot—sporting Mattel’s trademark tag, a “pull-and-speak” retractable chord (for his speaking debut) and a jowl-full of gifts.

Collectively, NACHRI and Mattel are distributing more than 113,000 toys, valued at nearly $500,000, to hospitalized children across the country as part of their 2005 giving campaign. “Mattel’s philanthropy is about putting smiles on the faces of children,” said Robert A. Eckert, chairman and chief executive officer of Mattel. “We are especially proud to help hospitalized children at the Colorado Springs Children’s Hospital through this unique product donation to NACHRI members.”

“Easing children’s anxiety while in a hospital setting is one of our primary objectives,” adds Colorado Springs Children’s Hospital Administrator June Chan. “These toys will provide hours of fun and distraction for our young patients, and we are very grateful to Mattel and NACHRI for their generous donation.”

Founded in 1968, NACHRI is an association of 186 children’s hospitals and related institutions devoted to improving the health and well-being of children and families through support of children’s hospitals’ four fold mission of clinical care, pediatric training, research and child advocacy.

The Mattel Children’s Foundation’s vision is to “make a meaningful difference, one child at a time.” The Foundation provides cash grants through domestic and international grant-making programs, as well as international scholarships to children of employees, matching gifts and volunteer grants for Mattel employees.  The Mattel Children’s Foundation is funded exclusively by cash donations from Mattel, Inc.
