Memorial Hospital for Children, the only children’s hospital in southern Colorado, hosted its annual Ruff ‘n’ Ready Pet & Kid Safety Fair on Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bear Creek Park. This free event drew hundreds of families and furry friends out for a day of activities, demonstrations, contests, safety information and giveaways.
Highlights included dancing dogs, an alpaca obstacle course, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo animals and a bike safety rodeo with free helmet fittings and giveaways, as well as music, food and prizes. The event raised more than $5,000 for Memorial Hospital for Children Pediatric Unit, helping to continue making this care area more child friendly and family-centered.
“With summer coming soon, this event creates a perfect opportunity to provide parents with the information and resources they need to help keep their children and pets safe,” said Cindy Gardner, registered pediatric nurse and event founder.
Accidental injury is the most common cause of death for children 14 and under in the United States. The biggest culprits are vehicle accidents, airway obstruction, drowning and fires/burns (Safe Kids, led through Memorial Hospital for Children for its presence in southern Colorado).
