Pediatric surgery requires the specialized expertise and training of board-certified pediatric surgeons who can evaluate and manage the simplest to the most complex of surgical conditions for children of all ages.
Along with providing excellent surgical care, a goal of Memorial Hospital for Children is to educate our patients, their families and the community about surgical conditions that are unique to children, including circumcision, congenital anomalies, deformities, etc. Other procedures or conditions evaluated and treated include:
• abdominal wall defects • appendicitis • branchial cleft cyst • central venous access • choledochal cyst • cholelithiasis • circumcision • colostomy • congenital diaphragmatic hernia • duodenal atresia • esophageal atresia • gastroesophageal reflux disease • hirschsprung’s disease • imperforate anus • inguinal hernia • intestinal atresia/obstruction • liver and biliary tract disease • lymphadenopathy • malrotation • minimally invasive surgery • necrotizing enterocolotis (NEC) • neuroblastoma • patent ductus arteriosus • pectus excavatum (Nuss procedure) • pectus carinatum • pyloric stenosis • swallowed foreign bodies • thyoglossal duct cyst • torticollis • tracheosphageal fistula • umbilical hernia • undescended testicle • wilm’s tumor (nephroblastoma)
- - Our Pediatric SurgeonsThomas Baesl, MD Thomas Baesl, MD, has been a pediatric surgeon at Memorial Hospital for Children since 2007. He graduated from SUNY Upstate Medical Center, completed his general surgery residency at the University of Minnesota Hospital and his pediatric surgery fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children University of Toronto. Dr. Baesl was also a professor of pediatric medicine and pediatric surgery at SUNY Syracuse.
Dr. Baesl is board-certified in surgery, with a certificate of special competency in pediatric surgery. Services include: - neonatal surgery

- trauma – traumatic injuries requiring surgical intervention
Rona Norelius, MD Rona Norelius, MD, is a pediatric surgeon at Memorial Hospital for Children. She graduated from Baylor College of Medicine, completed her general surgery residency at the University of Rochester and her pediatric surgery fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center.
Dr. Norelius is board-eligible for pediatric surgery. Services include: - neonatal surgery
