Children's Hospital Colorado at Memorial Hospital operates a 25-plus bed pediatric patient care unit (PPCU) designed for those children who require a hospital stay in a non-critical setting.
The PPCU provides multidisciplinary care for infants, children and teenage patients with respiratory, gastrointestinal and infectious diseases. Other pediatric subspecialties include oncology, orthopedics and cardiology. For example, the PPCU is the care location for children recovering from a serious illness, such as pneumonia, RSV or meningitis, and for most children after surgery.
Pediatric hospitalists (physicians who specialize in hospital care and treatment for children), community pediatricians and/or pediatric specialists/sub-specialists (e.g., pediatric surgeons, pediatric radiologists, etc.) provide medical care on the PPCU with the support of a comprehensive health care team made up of registered nurses and critical care technicians. Additionally, each patient is encouraged to involve a child life specialist in his or her care.
» More about: Child life specialists
Almost as important as the direct patient care we provide, the care environment contributes significantly to the care and healing process. In support of that philosophy, our PPCU:
- Accommodates at least one parent who can stay at their child’s bedside.
- Houses a large playroom chock full of board games, dolls/dollhouses, training computers, arts and crafts materials, trains and numerous other toys to promote and support the healing process by providing children with their greatest sense of normalcy: PLAY!
