Education is The Key to Manage Diabetes and Maintain Good Health
Diabetes doesn’t have to manage you, you can manage diabetes, health and life. Good control of diabetes can be managed with meal planning, exercise, medications (if required), and stress management.
The Diabetes Program, a service of Memorial’s Disease and Wellness Center, features education on how to manage diabetes with classes and learning how to monitor blood sugars.
Information Is Power: Sign up for Classes to Learn How to Successfully Manage Your Diabetes
Diabetes is a chronic disease that requires significant self management. And education makes the difference! The staff members at this Colorado Springs diabetes program know the power of education: the medical doctor, registered nurse, registered dietitians and nurse practitioners. Education empowers people with diabetes to maintain their long-term good health.
Our Diabetes Program here at Memorial offers a four-week educational program (two-hour classes over the course of four weeks). The goal is self management for optimal health—with or without insulin.
Call us at (719) 365-6987 to sign up for classes. You’ll learn:
- Why watching what you eat, dieting and exercising are vital;
- Why it is important to check your glucose regularly:
- Factors that influence glucose levels;
- How treatments and medications can help;
- Why it’s important to control your stress levels;
- How to watch for complications; and
- How to successfully manage your diabetes and enjoy true quality of life.
Case Managers Lend a Helping Hand
The case managers at this Colorado Springs diabetes program help you manage your health by providing additional education, checking your blood sugar levels, adjusting medication as necessary and helping you navigate “next steps” if you need treatment. Case managers also help pregnant mothers with gestational diabetes, which occurs in 5% of all pregnancies.
Precise Testing Equipment Gives an Accurate Picture of Blood Levels
You can have your blood tested with sophisticated equipment to get an extremely accurate picture of your blood levels.
- Hemoglobin A1C test—This test instantaneously shows your overall blood sugar control for the past three or four months, offering an informative look at the bigger picture. Armed with this data, we can investigate reasons why you may experience spikes, for example, and help you improve your quality of life.
- Continuous glucose monitoring—Wear this monitor for 72 hours to record your blood sugar and obtain a larger perspective. With this insight, we can adjust your medication and, perhaps, suggest changes to your diet and exercise regimen.
- Insulin pump—This precision equipment delivers an extremely small unit of insulin to help micromanage blood sugar levels.
