Invasive Cardiology Cardiac Catheterization Cardiac catheterization incorporates the latest technology for use in diagnostic procedures as well as treatment options. The passage of a catheter (a thin flexible tube) into the right or left side of the heart obtains diagnostic information about the heart or to provide therapeutic interventions in certain types of heart conditions. Cardiac catheterization can determine pressure and blood flow in the heart's chambers, collect blood samples from the heart, and examine the arteries of the heart by fluoroscopy. Fluoroscopy provides immediate visualization of the X-ray images on a screen as well as a permanent record of the procedure. During fluoroscopy, a catheter is used to inject dye into a vein or an artery. X-ray pictures of the dye's path then are used to evaluate the arteries, the valves and the heart. Electrophysiology Electrophysiology is the study of the heart's electrical circuitry. Catheters that probe the heart's electrical energy are passed through the body in the same fashion as a heart catherization. Besides being a valuable diagnostic test, therapy also can be delivered via catheters to the heart's circuitry, thereby correcting some of the abnormalities that may occur in one's lifetime. Pacemaker Clinic Pacemakers are small, specialized electrical generators that are implanted under the skin of the chest wall, with wires leading into and positioned in the atrial and/or ventricular chambers. They operate on special batteries that may last for as long as five to seven years. Pacemakers provide electrical impulses to the heart, which control slow or irregular heartbeats. The Memorial Health System Pacer/Device Clinic provides pacemaker follow-up and reprogramming services to ensure optimal device therapy. Implantable defibrillators are also treated in the same manner. Several device manufacturers list the clinic as being a facility where a vacationing patient may come for services. Any patient with an implantable pacemaker, defibrillator, or event recorder should have their device followed periodically to ensure its function. Clinic hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. During all other hours, patients are then handled through an on-call basis should an emergency arise.
