Our goal is to encourage cancer prevention and early detection by providing education and screenings for the community. In the fight against cancer, prevention, education and screenings are very important tools. Memorial Health System provides numerous prevention and screening activities each year for Breast Cancer, Colorectal, Skin and Prostate Cancers.

Breast Cancer

Memorial Health System’s Breast Care Center is a valuable resource to all women in our community. In addition to treating and supporting breast cancer patients, we provide preventive screenings, education and activities year round.

Every October, we provide mammogram specials to women in our community, giving them access to a screening mammogram at a significant discount. This special is ideal for women with insurance that requires high deductibles, co-pays or limited access to mammograms as a screening tool.

For those women who have no insurance or are underinsured, Memorial’s Breast Care Center has partnered with community organizations under the Colorado Women's Cancer Control Initiative (CWCCI) to provide free breast and cervical screening programs. CWCCI is funded through a government grant that enables women to turn to Planned Parenthood or their community’s health department for preventive gynecologic screenings—breast and cervical. For more information about this program, contact Planned Parenthood at 1-800-230-7526 or El Paso County Department of Health and Environment at (719) 578-3199.

In addition to screenings and education for individuals, Memorial’s Breast Care Center encourages organizations and community groups to contact a breast health nurse at (719) 365-2697 for breast health education programs year round.

Colorectal, Skin and Prostate Cancers

Community Education Events

Memorial Health System's Cancer Center provides three community education events in the spring and fall of each year in an effort to educate our community members on prevention and early detection of colorectal, skin and prostate cancers. Physicians and other health care providers present current information on screening methods and the importance of early detection, as well as ways in which to establish and maintain a healthy lifestyle. To learn more about these events, please contact our resource nurse at (719) 365-2535.

Community Cancer Screenings

The following cancer screenings are available to the community:

  • Colorectal Screening: Ongoing (the Fecal Occult Blood Testing kits for colorectal cancer screening are always available through HealthLink. Call (719) 444-CARE to request a kit.)
  • Skin Cancer Screenings: May.
  • Prostate Screening: September ($5.00 for the PSA blood test).

Gynecologic Cancer

Memorial Health System's Cancer Center collaborates with Denver’s Rocky Mountain Gynecologic Oncology practice to provide gynecologic oncology services at Memorial Hospital Central for women in southern Colorado.
