Memorial Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that relies on the use of drugs to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy can be administered through an IV or swallowed orally, depending on the medication(s).

It differs from surgery or radiation therapy in that cancer-fighting drugs circulate in the blood, enabling it to reach parts of the body where the cancer may have spread. As such, you may hear this treatment referred to as systemic.

For patients who are ideal candidates for chemotherapy treatment, Memorial Health System's Cancer Center offers cancer-fighting agents as a curative procedure or as an “adjuvant” therapy to increase the chances for a complete cure. Chemotherapy destroys microscopic cancer cells before they have the opportunity to grow.

We opened a new $1.5 million Inpatient and Outpatient Oncology unit located in Memorial Hospital Central in 2006 that allows us to offer a more home-like environment for chemotherapy patients and their families. Great care was taken to ensure the patient’s senses were all taken into consideration: sights, sounds and touches:

  • Beautiful artwork adorns almost every wall, gifted by both artists and friends of the unit
  • A comfortable patient day room opens onto a pergola-covered patio, which will be a warm respite in the summer months
  • Double doors leading to the patio allow patients’ beds to go outside as well
  • Soft colors, quiet carpeting and warm fabrics feel welcoming and help to create a place of healing
