Overview of the Memorial Hospital Central East Tower Expansion

Building ImageMemorial Health System is committed to continuous growth and improvement of services to meet the ever-growing health care needs of our community. Memorial’s latest expansion project is the construction of a five-story, 300,000 square ft. addition to Memorial Hospital Central at 1400 E. Boulder Street. The addition will include four patient-care floors, a basement and a shelled-in fifth floor for future growth. This new addition will house the following services:

  • Memorial Hospital for Children
  • Emergency Department
  • Women’s and Maternity Services

Memorial Hospital for Children

Memorial has a longstanding commitment to provide the best, most sensitive care to children in our community. The 100+ bed children’s hospital within a hospital will maintain a full range of health services and activities for infants through teens, including:

  • Level IIIb Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) – 60 beds
  • Pediatrics – private and semi-private rooms
  • Pediatric Observation Room
  • Only Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in southern Colorado – private and semi-private rooms
  • Pediatric Emergency Department
  • Playrooms for children on pediatric floor/Ronald McDonald family area

Emergency Department

Memorial’s new Emergency Department (ED) will occupy approximately 40,000 square feet, almost doubling its current space, and will provide the following comprehensive emergency and trauma services:

  • Behavioral Unit
  • Clinical Decision Unit
  • Critical Care Area
  • Express Care Unit
  • Pediatric Unit
  • Radiology
  • Resuscitation
  • Triage

Women’s and Maternity Services

Expanded services for expectant mothers and their babies will include:

  • Maternal Fetal Medicine
  • 15 labor, delivery and recovery rooms
  • 32 private mother-baby unit
  • 8 obstetric triage rooms
  • 24 private women’s pavilion rooms

Project Timeline

Construction began in the spring of 2004. The Emergency Department was completed in late 2006 and the remaining four floors will be completed in mid-December, 2007.
