Adult Volunteer Positions
Please note for most positions, the hours have some flexibility. All adult volunteers are required to submit a written letter of reference prior to attending orientation. Also, criminal background checks are done on all adult volunteers.
PATIENT ACCESS/ADMISSIONS:
Make admission cards and ID bracelets; escort/transport patients to floors; deliver paperwork to nursing stations. Various other clerical tasks. Hours: Morning, afternoon, and evening shifts, seven days a week.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH:
Assist hospital staff with registration and other non-medical tasks during health screening events conducted throughout the community, including flu shot clinics, cancer screenings and Hours: Variable, very occasional, sign up as available.

UREGENT CARE CENTER/AFTER HOURS CLINICS:
Assist with busy reception and helps with patient flow and supplies. Shifts are seven (7) days a week, open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

BIRTH CENTER TOUR GUIDE:
Following a script, you will take expectant parents on a tour of the Birth Center and the Mother Baby (Maternity) unit. One, one hour tour a month.

BLOOD DONOR PROGRAM:
Work with hospital Blood Bank personnel to register donors, label donor bags, and perform other functions during mobile blood drives held at sites throughout Colorado Springs and surrounding communities. Hepatitis B vaccine available. Volunteers are also needed to call potential donors. Hours: variable, occasional, sign up as available.

BOOK CART:
Offer complimentary magazines and books to patients in their rooms and place magazines in waiting areas; process donated books and magazines. Hours: Daily

BOUTIQUE/GIFT SHOP:
Operate the cash register; sell gifts, flowers, cards and sundry items; assist in stocking and displaying merchandise. Work under the supervision of paid manager. Hours: Monday - Friday, 9 to 12:30 p.m.; 12:30 to 4 p.m.; 4-7:30 p.m.; morning and afternoons on weekends.

BREAST CARE CENTER:
Reception, greet patients, make them feel welcome, and clerical tasks. Hours: M-F, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Assist nurses with paperwork, errands and attending to nonmedical needs of patients having chemotherapy. Hours: Weekday mornings

Assist staff with labeling and packaging of hospital supplies. Hours: Daily

COMPLEMENTARY THERAPY/ART:
Volunteers with art training assist patients with art projects,
rewarding to patients, gives them a creative outlet and helps them express themselves. The volunteer must either be a degreed artist, art instructor or present evidence of experience of working in the field of art.

COMPLEMENTARY THERAPY/MUSIC:
The volunteer must either be a degreed musician, music instructor or present evidence of experience of music expertise. Play soothing music for patients.

COMPLEMENTARY THERAPY/MASSAGE:
The volunteer must be a certified massage therapist, licensed by El Paso County. Under very careful guidelines, the volunteer gives light touch massages to patients and staff.

COMPLEMENTARY THERAPY/CLOWNING:
The volunteer must present evidence of experience of working as a clown, i.e., successful completion of a clowning course. Interacts with staff, patients, family member and patients.

COMPLEMENTARY THERAPY/PET:
Volunteers with specially trained dogs (we can provide information on this training) and who are carefully selected visit patients. The dog must pass the Canine Good Citizen behavioral test with the American Kennel Club and be a member of Delta Society, Pet Partners. The owner must show evidence of current vaccinations. The owner then attends new volunteer orientation, after that the pet and owner tour the hospital with the pet therapy chairperson. Hours: Visits hospital once a week or once every other week.

CRAFTS:
Make articles to sell in the Gift Shop and at the Boutique Noel; work on projects for patient gifts and Christmas bunting stockings for December newborns. Knitting/sewing of special projects as needed might include making eye glass holders for patients. Yarn is provided to knit lap blankets for cancer oncology patients. Hours: Monthly meeting - 1st Tuesday, 9:30-1:00. Hours worked at home are also recorded.

CUDDLERS:
Provide sensory stimulation, warmth and cuddling to infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). A special training program is required. Only available for volunteers with greater than six months service. Must be 21. Hours: 7 days a week. There is a waiting interval for this position.

EMERGENCY & TRAUMA CENTER:
Attend to personal (nonmedical) needs of patients. Provide communication link between patient, family and staff. Extend hospitality to patient’s family/friends. Assist staff with errands, making beds, stocking supplies and other tasks as appropriate. Must be at least 21 years of age. Six-month commitment required. Hepatitis B vaccine required. Hours: 24 Hours

ESCORT:
Act as greeter to the public, escorting and transporting patients and visitors to locations throughout the hospital. Hours: 7 days a week, 8:00-Noon; Noon-4:00, 4-7 p.m. We have a significant need for more volunteers.

HOSPITALITY VOLUNTEER:
Volunteer will do a variety of tasks as needed; visiting lonely patients, deliver books or magazines, round in the waiting areas to see if visitors need assistance, creating a better environment for patients. Hours: Daily

INFORMATION DESK:
Maintain patient room files and provide information/directions to visitors. Answer patient location telephone lines and transfer calls. Sorts mail and perform other duties as needed for the smooth operation of the hospital’s primary information center. Strong public relations skills are needed. Hours: 7 days a week, 8 a.m.-noon; noon-4 p.m., 4 p.m.-7 p.m.

NEWBORN HEARING SCREENING:
Using a computer, screen for hearing loss in newborn babies, volunteers work together under the supervision of an audiologist. Personal contact with babies. Daily, Sunday thru Saturday, mornings and weekday evenings.

NURSERY:
Stock supplies; make packets and arm boards; fold baby (Intensive Care) shirts; perform miscellaneous duties for the unit clerk. Reception work, answer phones. There is no personal contact with babies. Hours: 7 days a week.

OFFICES:
Perform clerical duties as directed by staff in various departments throughout the hospital. Tasks are primarily alphabetizing, filing, copying, making charts, data entry and packets. Hours: Generally, normal business hours. Strong need for clerical volunteers throughout the hospital.

OUTPATIENT SURGERY:
Run errands and perform nonmedical duties as directed by staff. Attend to personal needs of patients and their families. Transport patients to exits upon dismissal. Busy area, Hepatitis B vaccine available. Hours: Weekdays, 8 a.m. to noon; noon to 4 p.m.

Volunteers are assigned to a specific floor: Cardiac; General Medical; Surgical; Orthopedic/Neurological; Maternity; & Pediatric. Assist nurses and unit clerks with errands, transport patients, help with meal trays and visit with patients. Hours: Daily, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.; 1 to 4 p.m.; 4-7 p.m.; 6 to 9 p.m.

PEDIATRIC PLAYROOM:
Under supervision of a Child Life Therapist volunteers do play therapy with pediatric patients. Hours are 7 days a week, noon, afternoon and early evening shifts. Great opportunity to interact with children and make their hospital experience more enjoyable.

REHABILITATION SERVICES:
Inpatient: Accompany staff to patients’ rooms and assist as needed; transport patients to and from treatment area; stock supplies; perform clerical and other duties as requested. Hours: Weekdays, 8:30-11:30 a.m.; 1:30-4:30 p.m., 4-7 p.m. Sat., Sun. 8:30-11:30 a.m.

SURGERY HOSPITALITY:
Relay information to families of patients in main Surgery Waiting area. Assist visitors in locating patients after surgery. Good public relations skills are important, as the volunteer interacts with families of surgical patients, surgeons and staff. Very important area, need more volunteers. Hours: Weekdays, 8 a.m. to noon; noon-4 p.m.; 4 to 7 p.m.

Are trained in several areas to fill in on a flexible basis, this generally includes escort and patient floors. Volunteers can work flexible hours.
