Rehabilitation Therapies/Programs

Audiology
Memorial’s audiology program provides hearing screenings (audiometric evaluations) for children of all ages. However, all babies born at Memorial Hospital Central automatically receive a newborn hearing screening which provides parents with the information they need to know regarding their child’s hearing and how that could impact speech and language development.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication
Speech/language pathology collects and integrates information about a child’s cognitive, sensory, perceptual, social, motor, reading/literacy, writing and linguistic capabilities.

Cleft-Palate Clinic
Along with a multidisciplinary medical approach, speech/language pathology and audiology provide assessment and parent education with periodic clinic visits for children with oral-facial birth defects.

Feeding Therapy and Rehabilitation Swallow Studies
Memorial’s Pediatric Rehabilitation offers a variety of approaches to address feeding difficulties, including a feeding clinic, modified barium swallow studies for a view inside the functioning of a child’s gastrointestinal system, and both individual and group feeding therapy. Traditional oral-motor and sensory-based feeding approaches to therapy are used.

Hippotherapy
Hippotherapy is a therapy treatment designed to improve a child’s posture, balance, mobility, coordination, communication and sensory processing. It uses the natural movement of a horse to aid patients experiencing autism, developmental delays, cerebral palsy, chromosomal abnormalities, etc. Hippotherapy is currently being offered in partnership with the Pikes Peak Therapeutic Riding Center in Falcon, Colorado.

Infant Developmental Follow-up and Assessment
For infants out of the NICU or who have been identified as being at risk for developmental issues, a comprehensive assessment can be provided to include an occupational, physical and speech therapist,as well as a developmental pediatrician. With standardized assessments, recommendations for therapy, community programs or follow-up can be made.

Massage Therapy
In conjunction with physical and/or occupational therapy, massage therapy is provided to children to enhance their motor function when neuromuscular limitations are present.

Pool Therapy
We provide pool-based treatment for a variety of conditions. The pool is indoor and kept at a therapeutic temperature (94 to 96). The pool also offers a variety of longer-term patients a fun environment to address virtually all therapy goals.

Rehabilitation Clinic
The rehabilitation clinic offers comprehensive services for children with disabilities. The team consists of a pediatric physiatrist (rehabilitation doctor), occupational and/or physical therapist, adaptive equipment specialist and orthotist (a specialist in correcting deformities, aiding in movement and reducing physical discomfort using splints, braces and special footwear).

Therapeutic Casting & Splinting
Orthotics (splints, braces, special footwear) are used to support and protect weak and ineffective joints or muscles in order to enhance function/performance. Resource of interest: Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children
