Safe Kids Colorado Springs

Safe Kids Colorado Springs is led by Memorial Hospital for Children. The mission of Safe Kids is to reduce preventable childhood injuries among children (14 and under) in the Pikes Peak region through public awareness, education, policy, advocacy and community action. The Colorado Springs chapter is part of the National Safe Kids Colorado Springs. Kelli Jones, coordinator for the Colorado Springs coalition, can be reached at (719) 365-5834.

Safe Kids Colorado Springs offers the following ongoing programs and presentations:

“Trauma Nurses Talk Tough”—a presentation offered by Memorial Health System’s Trauma Center that addresses the consequences following unsafe teenage driving practices by displaying life experiences of numerous patients who trauma nurses have cared for throughout the region.

“Think First”—a program, based on the motto “Use Your Mind to Protect Your Body,” teaches children safety issues to prevent brain and spinal cord injuries. Memorial Health System’s program is presented by a nurse or other qualified person and includes a short video along with a survivor speaker, who talks about the recovery process after sustaining a serious injury.

“Buckle Up!”—a car seat program funded in part by Memorial Health System’s Auxiliary for Memorial patients who may be facing financial difficulties. The goal of this program is to ensure that all children are restrained in appropriate child passenger safety seats regardless of their financial situation.
